Living on the Edge of Two Changing Worlds: Forecasting the Responses of Rocky Intertidal Ecosystems to Climate Change
نویسندگان
چکیده
Long-term monitoring shows that the poleward range edges of intertidal biota have shifted by as much as 50 km per decade, faster than most recorded shifts of terrestrial species. Although most studies have concentrated on species-range edges, recent work emphasizes how modifying factors such as regional differences in the timing of low tide can overwhelm large-scale climatic gradients, leading to a mosaic of environmental stress. We discuss how changes in the mean and variability in climatic regimes, as modified by local and regional factors, can lead to complex patterns of species distribution rather than simple range shifts. We describe how ecological forecasting may be used to generate explicit hypotheses regarding the likely impacts of different climatic change scenarios on the distribution of intertidal species and how related hindcasting methods can be used to evaluate changes that have already been detected. These hypotheses can then be tested over a hierarchy of temporal and spatial scales using coupled field and laboratory-based approaches. 373 A nn u. R ev . E co l. E vo l. Climate change in the rocky intertidal zone: predicting and measuring the body temperature of a keystone predator
Forecasting the responses of populations and ecosystems to climate change requires that we understand both the direct effects of temperature on organism physiology and the indirect effects of temperature change on interactions such as predation and competition. The sea star Pisaster ochraceus is a keystone predator in the rocky intertidal zone with a broad geographic distribution along the west...
متن کاملForecasting climate changes of Ziarat watershed in Gorgan city
Climate is a complex system which is changing mainly due to the increase of greenhouse gases. Because of the importance of climate change and the effects it can have on water resources, in recent years, this topic has been taken into consideration for different basins on Earth. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of climate change and forecasting meteorological variables o...
متن کاملThe study of seaweeds biomass from intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf
Rocky shores are one of the most important habitats of marine environment in coastal areas. They host marine organisms including seaweeds because of existence of strong and stable substrate for their growths. Intertidal rocky shores are a prominent feature on coastal areas of Qeshm Island located at the northern part of Strait of Hormuz. In order to study biomass of seaweeds on rocky intertidal...

متن کاملThe Antagonistic Effect of Raised Salinity on the Aerobic Performance of a Rocky Intertidal Gastropod Nassarius deshayesianus (Issel, 1866) Exposed to Raised Water Temperature
Rocky intertidal organisms are facing pronounced fluctuations in environmental conditions even at small spatial and temporal scales. This heterogeneous habitat is a proper model system to investigate effects of physical parameters and their interactions on physiological performances of marine organisms. In the intertidal zone (especially in tidal pools), the temperature and salinity usually inc...
